Water-main leak investigations
We help utility contractors and municipal project teams narrow suspected leak areas on newly installed water mains after a failed pressure test. Common inquiries involve 6-, 8- and 16-inch ductile-iron mains and test sections of about 500 feet.
Review the pressure test
We start with the test record and how the section was isolated. Trapped air, temperature changes and other test conditions can affect the result. The project specification governs acceptance, including any required measurement of make-up water.
Locate a suspected leak area
When a leak produces a usable signal, sensors at accessible fittings can measure the difference in arrival time. Pipe material, diameter and distance along the pipe between sensors affect the estimate. Branches, background noise and weak signals can reduce confidence. Contact listening or a ground microphone may help check the area where conditions allow.
Send the information needed to scope the work
- Pipe material, diameter, section length and alignment
- Test specification, readings, duration and any recorded make-up water
- Locations of isolation valves, hydrants and other accessible fittings
- Project location, access restrictions and target date
Findings guide the next investigation or excavation decision. The utility or project owner determines acceptance and retest requirements.
